Welcome to the Electricity Authority’s Solar installations map
Thinking about installing solar, but unsure where to start? Want to know what solar installations are already working near you? Use this interactive map to explore the size and location of most solar installations across New Zealand, right down to street level.
Knowing how many solar installations already operate near you, what size and type they are, can help you understand what might be best for you as you start your solar journey. If it works for your neighbour, it may work for you as well – but there are lots of variables to consider.

How to check solar installations by street
Follow these instructions to check solar installations by street. You can use the same approach for other filters.
- Adjust one or more filters to refine your search. For example:
- Select show Streets and set the Installation type to Residential to check a street.
- Use the optional Total generation kW field if you only want to display installations of a certain generation capacity.
- Use the optional Installations field if you only want to display streets with a certain number of installations.
- Each coloured dot on the map represents a street. Use the key on the left-hand side for an estimate of the number of installations and generation capacity based on the dot's size and colour.
- Hover your mouse over the area or coloured dot you’re interested in, and solar installation details about that street will appear.
- Double-click (and repeat) to zoom in to find a specific street. You can use the + and – symbols (bottom right), your scroll wheel, or your fingers if your device is touchscreen.
The map also shows:
- whether installations are residential or non-residential
- the number of installations per street (streets with fewer than four installations are shown as '3 or less' to protect privacy)
- total generation capacity, in kilowatts, for an installation or group of installations – the maximum amount of electricity they can produce at one time
- average generation capacity, in kilowatts, for a group of installations.
Notes, disclaimer and privacy
To protect the privacy of others, the locations of the street-level markers are at the ‘centre’ of the street and are not intended to be installation-specific; and streets with fewer than four installations are displayed as '3 or less'.
The data behind this map is sourced from the Authority’s Electricity Registry. The Registry is updated regularly, though some very new or recently changed installations may not yet be included. Prior to August 2025, some installations may not have been recorded in the Registry as solar installations and these may not be included in results. However, we estimate that missing solar installations will be less than five percent of totals returned. Download the dataset
This map is intended as a guide only. Please seek further information specific to your location and household to ensure you make the best solar/battery installation decisions for your circumstances.
We acknowledge and thank Rewiring Aotearoa for the idea for this map, which is based on its earlier Solar Streets tool. The Electricity Authority agreed to take over the development of the map because of our access to the Electricity Registry.
