Improving visibility of developments on distribution networks

We are seeking to improve visibility of developments on electricity distribution networks as electrification accelerates and investment in distributed generation grows.

In addition to our Generation Investment Pipeline, which provides a detailed picture of planned transmission-connected generation projects, we are looking to make comparable information available for distribution networks.  This will create a more complete picture of future electricity supply and demand.

We have decided, following consultation with the sector, to require distributors to regularly provide information on significant distributed generation and load connection developments. A summary of this information will be made publicly available, helping developers, regulators and system planners to make better informed decisions.

We have issued a notice under clause 2.16 of the Electricity Industry Participation Code to obtain the required information.

This aligns with the implementation of other Network Connections Project reforms that simplify and standardise connection processes and require distributors to publish their connection pipelines.

The alignment reduces compliance burden while still meeting our transparency objectives, and we will support distributors to build efficient data collection and management systems.

In response to stakeholder feedback, we have delayed the start of the new monthly reporting requirements until 1 December 2026 as new rules from stage one of the Network Connections Project are also due to come into force at that time.

We require the first set of data submission by 7 December 2026, marking the start of enhanced visibility into future distributed generation and load development.
